This is how people entertained themselves in the past, they made stuff. In this case I would guess this is some kind of tea cozy maybe.
Embroidery takes a little bit of time to master, and you need good concentration skills to make it look good, but you can sew it just about anywhere. Its a great thing to be able to do while waiting for the ox to cook. It allows you to pass the time, and in the end you have a useful thing you can either show off, sell or trade for something better.
