The deathly figure is a skeleton who is playing a haunting tune of a violin, the musical instrument also known as a fiddle. The artist is holding a paintbrush and a palette in his hands. The artist appears to be haunted by the realization that death is so close to him. The original artwork was painted by Arnold Böcklin in 1872.
