Self-heal, Medicinal Plant, Unalaska Island Postcard
Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris L.) was used by the Unangan people to treat open wounds. The plant prevents infections, slows bleeding, and speeds healing. Self-heal grows in a loose cluster of blooming stems which spread out over the ground. In the early stages of development the flower looks like a dark maroon pinecone. When the tiny bright purple blossoms appear, they are similar in appearance to snapdragon blossoms. The leaves are simple elongated ovals. Self-heal is a common plant on Unalaska Island and often it is found growing by the roadsides. It is a member of the borage family.
