The patron saint of Scotland, Saint Andrew, was crucified on a cross in an X shape. According to legend, the origin of the Scottish flag dates back to the ninth century when a Pictish leader saw clouds in the shape of a white cross in a blue sky. Taken as a good omen, he led his troop of Picts and Scots to victory in a battle against the Angles, the German invaders who gave England its name.
