Der Begriff "Schwarzer Schwan"stammt aus der Wissenschaftstheorie und beschreibt ein Outlier-Ereignis, das meistens jenseits der alltäglichen Wahrnehmung liegt. Mit der Finanzkrise von 2007/08 ist dieser Begriff in eine gemeinsame Sprache eingetreten. Oft wird sie als "Schwanz-Ereignis"oder "Schwanz-Risiko"bezeichnet, da ihr Auftreten am Rande einer statistischen Standardverteilungskurve liegt. Als solche wird es meist benutzt, um ein negatives Ereignis zu bezeichnen, das den normalen Fluss der Dinge entgleitet. Das Design auf diesem Produkt versucht, diesen bedrohlichen Charakter zu zeigen, in einer Art nicht so sehr der "Elefant im Raum", sondern der "Schwan im Raum".
