Schooners Dreadnought and Columbia 1870 Tile
Race between the Schooners Dreadnought and Columbia by James Edward Buttersworth, circa 1870 Sail Steam Yacht Emily of the New York Yacht Club
The race was a stake race observed by the yacht Emily of the New York Yacht Club. The Columbia made American sailing history when it appeared to be able to defeat the 143-ft Canadian schooner Bluenose in a competition for the fishermen's trophy. The races ended in a dispute when the Bluenose's captain refused to complete the last of three races. Schooner Columbia participated in several races before disappearing off Nova Scotia in 1927. Columbia won the America's Cup in 1871. The Columbia took part in several races and disappeared off Nova Scotia. Schooner Dreadnought: A 200-foot-long emigrant carrier that could accommodate 200 passengers. It had a beam of 41.5 feet and a hold depth of 26.5 feet.
