Savannah Municipal Airport Travis Field Historic Postcard
Vintage postcard illustrated by the Tichnor Brothers in the 1930s-40s, of the Savannah Municipal Airport. It was opened on September 20, 1929, and in 1932 it was named Hunter Field. In the 40s, if war had started, The Chatham Army Air Corps proposed to take it over. It was developed more, during a time prior to WWII, and then used for bomber and crew training for B-24 bombers during WWII. In 1948, Chatham Army Air Corps renamed the terminal and airport to Travis Field and turned it over the Georgia Air National Guard. In honour of Savannah native Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, killed in a crash of a B-29 bomber near Fairfield-Suisun AFB, California, and his brother, Colonel William Travis.
