The San Francisco cable car is one of the city’s most iconic and enduring symbols, offering both a historic ride and a practical way to explore its famously steep hills. Riding the cable car offers a unique, open-air experience through some of the city's most scenic neighbourhoods. The Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines start near Union Square and climb past Chinatown, Nob Hill, and Russian Hill, offering postcard views of the bay and Alcatraz. The California Street line, meanwhile, cuts a straight path through the Financial District and Nob Hill. At the cable car turnaround stations, passengers can watch conductors manually rotate the cars on wooden turntables—a charming bit of old-world engineering still in daily use. More than just transportation, the San Francisco cable car is a moving piece of history, celebrated for its charm, resilience, and the clang of its signature bell echoing through the city streets.
