Salmonberry Blossom, Unalaska Island Postcard

Salmonberry bushes (Rubus spectabilis) grow all over Unalaska Island. In May their star-shaped pink blossoms appear. By the middle of June the flowers have lost their petals and the berries have begun to grow. Salmonberries are named for their similarity to a cluster of salmon eggs and they taste like pomegranates. Salmonberries have only spread to the eastern Aleutian Islands. The plant is a member of the rose family.
