About This Design
Salida, Colorado Postcard
Photograph of Salida taken from Tenderfoot Hill looking South about 1883. In the left foreground stands the Monte Cristo Hotel and Restaurant and to the right stands the D&RGW railroad depot. The town's name is pronounced /səˈlaɪdə/ sə-LYE-də in English and [saˈliða] ('exit') in Spanish. Founded in 1880, Salida was originally a railroad town started when the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad was awarded the Western route through Colorado. The town was a significant link in the D&RGW Railroad and serviced locomotives before they left to go over the Rocky Mountains.
