Saint Peter Poster

Peter Paul Rubens painted Saint Peter as Pope between 1610 and 1612. This religious oil on panel depicts Saint Peter, traditionally considered the first pope and leader of the early Christian Church, shown wearing papal vestments including the pallium and holding the Keys to Heaven, symbolizing his divine authority. The painting is part of the Apostolado del duque de Lerma series and measures approximately 107 cm by 82 cm. It is currently housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Rubens’ portrayal emphasizes Saint Peter’s spiritual significance and authority within the Church, rendered with the dramatic Baroque style characteristic of Rubens, featuring rich colour, strong contrasts, and a dignified, solemn expression.
