Ihren Namen verdankt die Stadt dem Apotheker und Chemieunternehmer Carl Leverkus, dessen Familie von der Hofschaft Leverkusen auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Stadt Remscheid abstammte. Leverkus gründete um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bei Wiesdorf am Rhein eine Chemiefabrik und gab der Siedlung seiner Arbeiterschaft den Namen Leverkusen - so hieß schon der Familiensitz in Lennep. 1930 ging der Name auf die neu gegründete Stadt Leverkusen über. - Geographisch gesehen ist Westdeutschland vor allem der rheinländische Teil Nordrhein-Westfalens und Hessens, Rheinland-Pfalz und das Saarland.
