This compelling portrait of Red Wing, a Native American man, was taken by photographer Edward S. Curtis around the year 1908. I look at the face of this man and I wonder what sort of life he must have led to have such sad eyes that show such depth. He is wearing beaded necklaces and an elaborately beaded buckskin shirt trimmed with ermine tails or white rabbit fur. Edward S. Curtis was an extraordinary photographer who documented for more than 20 years, in his words, “the old time Indian, his dress, his ceremonies, his life and manners.”
