Red Cathedral from Golden Canyon Postcard

Red Cathedral is a prominent formation that is visible for much of the hike through Golden Canyon in Death Valley National Park. The dark red tones contrast against much of the lighter coloured mounds surrounding it, making it quite striking to behold. My wife and I took the hike through the canyon and as far up on this wonderful formation on a mid-January day. One of the challenges to photographing in this canyon is that, due to its narrowness and the high walls, much of it never really gets that “sweet” early and late day light a landscape photographer craves. I captured this frame in mid-day sun that was nicely diffused by some high clouds, which helped a great deal.
