This red cardinal in snow lumbar pillow is made from an original watercolor painting. The pigment from the berries and branches originated from smashed bits of the Nandina plant. The original artwork is initially done without sketching. Each leaf is ripped from the plant and laid onto watercolor paper. A good pounding with a hammer releases the natural pigments within the plant. Oftentimes it's a blob of colour that bleeds from the plant onto the paper, or sometimes it spits its' colour outward creating spectacular pigmentation and textural effects.
