SOME FACTS: Both rapeseed and canola are members of the cabbage family and have bright yellow flowers. In the UK, rapeseed and canola are considered to be the same thing, but the oil may be cold-pressed. Cold-pressed rapeseed oil is considered to be healthier from improved nutrient retention. Canola is a type of rapeseed. In the 1970s, canola was created through traditional plant cross-breeding by removing glucosinolates and erucic acid from the rapeseed. In high doses, erucic acid was believed to be inedible or toxic. The new plant was renamed “canola,” a combination of “Canadian” and “oil” (or ola) to clarify the difference. For this reason, canola is not available in Europe.
