Rainbow Smelt Poster
It is a member of the Freshwater Smelt Family. It is found in Atlantic drainages from Lake Melville in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada to Delaware River in Pennsylvania, USA and west through Great lakes (where it is considered non native). Arctic and Pacific drainages from Bathurst Inlet, Northwest Territories to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Also Pacific drainages of Asia. It inhabits cool clear lakes, medium to large rivers, and coastal waters. It feeds on invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae and aquatic worms. It can reach a maximum length of 35.6 cm (14 inches).
