R-4, World's First Military Helicopter

The R-4, also known as the Sikorsky R-4, was the first mass-produced helicopter in the United States and the world's first military helicopter. Developed by Igor Sikorsky and introduced in the early 1940s, the R-4 was used primarily for reconnaissance, transport, and search and rescue missions during World War II. It featured a single main rotor and a tail rotor for stability and control. The R-4 was a pioneering design in rotary-wing aviation and laid the groundwork for future helicopter development. Despite its limited speed and payload compared to modern helicopters, the R-4's successful deployment in various roles marked a significant milestone in the evolution of helicopter technology.
