Puvis de Chavannes Fantasy Pegasus CC0036 Poster

Art poster inspired by a beautiful dreamlike painting by French artist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. The name of the painting is Fantasy (La Fantaisie) and it was completed in 1866. Fantasy belongs to a series of four allegorical paintings, the other ones being Vigilance, Meditation and History. By these works Pierre Puvis de Chavannes wanted to say something important about the process of art creation. The picture shows a female figure, perhaps a muse, using a flowery vine to lasso a winged horse or Pegasus, a symbol of imagination. A youth is sitting in the grass, picking flowers for a wreath. This activity may be implying a sensitivity to beauty. The setting is idyllic, a verdant wooded landscape and some distant fading mountains in the background. Suitable for anyone interested in the art of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and the (later) Symbolist movement. Also a great poster for all of us daydreamers!
