Purple Bog Orchid, Unalaska Island Postcard

Purple bog orchids (Dactylorhiza aristata) are also known as showy orchids. They are found all over Unalaska Island and throughout the Aleutian Islands and parts of southeast Alaska. The leaves develop dark purple spots and the flowers vary from almost a magenta to deep purple-violet in colouring. This orchid grows from 8 to 10 inches tall, and it blooms from early to mid summer.
