Puck, A Sprite by Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939) Puck is a character from Shakespeare's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. He is a fairy or a sprite. Here, Puck flies through the air over a mid-summer scene in sepia tones. Arthur Rackham was popular during the Art Nouveau period. His illustrations and paintings often contain fairies, elves, sprites, trolls, giants, gnomes and fairy tales. He regained popularity in the 1960's and 1970's. Rackham illustrated many Grimm's Fairytales as well as Shakespeare, Wind in the Willows, Cinderella, Snow White, Peter Pan, Wagner's Ring Cycle with the Valkeries, and others.
