Ptarmigan in Summer, Unalaska Island Postcard
The ptarmigan is a type of partridge which lives on the tundra. The birds can be found all over Unalaska Island in the hills and on the mountains. In summer they have a golden colouring like the bird shown in this photo. The red streak above the eye which was so bright and colourful in spring fades and becomes dull as summer progresses. In winter the ptarmigan's feathers turn white, leaving only a few black markings.
