Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is a 15-acre historic waterfront attraction in St. Augustine, Florida. The nation’s oldest city, marks the legendary site where Juan Ponce de León landed in 1513 and where Pedro Menéndez de Avilés established the first permanent European settlement in 1565. Visitors drink from the famous spring in the Spring House, explore Timucua Indian exhibits, watch Spanish cannon firings, see free-roaming peacocks, visit the planetarium and Discovery Globe, climb the observation tower for river views, and walk through lush Old Florida gardens and archaeological sites overlooking the Matanzas River. The Great Cross (a short walk away at Mission Nombre de Dios): The massive 208-foot stainless-steel cross erected in 1965–66. It stands on the approximate spot where the original small wooden cross was planted in 1565 and serves as a “Beacon of Faith.” Many visitors photograph both sites together.
