In the garden, illuminated by the continuous light of the White Nights, a couple sits hand in hand at the center of the scene—not as obvious protagonists, but as figures wrapped in silence, their features indistinct, appearing almost like shadows touched by the milky light that blankets St. Petersburg during this season. The lack of facial detail allows for an essential ambiguity: the framing might be read as the viewpoint of a third party observing discreetly—much like Dostoevsky’s solitary narrator—or it might suggest the narrator himself, captured in a moment of tenderness that the city rarely affords. The softly lit garden seems suspended in time.
