Poster Westerfield Dutch Family Coat Of Arms.
A. I. Gemini generated improved design of my colorization of the Dutch van Westervelt Family Coat of Arms that I did many years ago using a tomb photo from the 1905 book Genealogy of the van Westervelt Family (Walter Tallman Westervelt / Wharton Dickinson).
I colorized our Westerfield Dutch Family Coat Of Arms. Found on the family tomb on the floor of the nave of the great church of Harderwijk, Gelderland, the former Duchy of Gelderland (Gelre, Geldriae, Guelders, Geldern), Netherlands. The family van Westervelt ruled Harderwijk as hereditary burgomasters.
The coat of arms was formed by three gold Fleurs de lis upon an emerald green shield held by two upright golden lions, knight's armor, a gold ducal coronet crown through which a knight's arms held a larger gold Fleur de lis.
The golden Fleur de LIS symbol came from the natural golden irises found growing along the rivers of the Salland Region by Zwolle, the ancient home of the Salian Franks who migrated Westward eventually becoming kings of France (comes from name Franks).
The Harderwijk (Gelderland Province) family name by legend came from the Overijssel Province Salland Region Zwollerkerspel Havezate (archaic Havezathe) manor house Westervelde circa 1500 which was owned by Johan ten Bussche Alderman of Zwolle and was located "where the water course Westerveldse flows into the Zwarte Water. This manor house was greatly enlarged 1603 - 1606 to become the largest Dutch Castle in Salland. The spelling of the manor house included Westervelde, Westerveld, Westervelt, and less often Westerveldt.
August 2, 1606, the Lord of Westervelt Westerveld Gerard van Warmelo appointed Drost of Salland by Prince of Orange William the Silent before his assassination defeated the Spanish forces of Ambrogio Spinola at the Battle of Berkummer Bridge saving Zwolle and began the eventual end of the 80 years War freeing the Dutch States Republic from the Spanish Empire. Gerard and his military buddy and relative Lubber Ulger fought for the very young Prince of Orange Maurice (Maurits) of Nassau. Gerard died December 31, 1610 with no legitimate heirs. The next known Lord of the Kasteel was Rutger van Haersolte (1600 - 1666) son of Fenna Noorddijk Ulger, daughter of Lubbert Ulger. Rutger bought the Kasteel 1631 - 1633 but was already living there his age 20 - 21 (1620 1621). He did not marry until his age 27 (1627). My 9 great grandfather Lubbert Lubbertsen van Westervelt born 1620 died age 66, 1686, immigrated to America in 1662 with brother Willem and their wives and children from Meppel Drenthe Province but Meppel straddles the boundary with Overijssel and the Ulgers owned land in Drenthe. Mysteriously the immigrants never used the van Westervelt name before immigration. It is my idea that they were illegitimate sons of Rutger van Haersolte (1600 - 1666) Lord of Westervelt Westerveld. before his 1627 marriage. Then they were adopted and raised by Lubbert Ulger thus they were Lubbertsens by adoption. But they were biological sons of Rutger van Haersolte Lord of Westervelt Westerveld and so this explains why they did not use the name before immigration. A few generations later our name changed from Westervelt to Westerfield.
