Jugend Magazine was a German weekly publication in late 19th century that focussed on the Art Nouveau movement, known as "Jugendstil." This image is from the front cover of the May 1896 edition, which was the same year the magazine was launched.
It depicts Pan, the mythological goat-footed Greek god, playing his pipes and enchanting a young maiden or nymph who sits across from him. The sun is shinning. The fields are fertile and alive with flowers. Certainly the scene is set for the birth of the Art Nouveau movement and Jugend Magazine.
