It was built in 1881–85 from a design by a disciple of the French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel. Douro River is spanned in central Porto by several bridges. Porto is sometimes called “the city of bridges”. The top deck has the Metro do Porto light rail system (line D) and a pedestrian walkway, offering great views of the historic centre of Porto, the Port wine caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, and the river Douro.
