Ponte and Castle Sant'Angelo - Rome, Italy Tile

This ceramic tile features Castel Sant’Angelo and its namesake bridge in Rome, with the marble angels forming a ceremonial approach across the Tiber. The castle began in the second century as Emperor Hadrian’s family mausoleum before becoming a fortress, papal residence and prison. Ponte Sant’Angelo was built for Hadrian in AD 136; its ten Baroque angels carrying symbols of the Passion were installed in 1668 from Bernini’s designs.
