The Christchurch Town Hall organ, built by Rieger Orgelbau of Austria, is world famous as one of the first organs to be followed on the internet as it was being built in 1997. Fans worldwide were distraught when this top rate instrument was struck silent in 2011 after devastating earthquakes struck the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. Many instruments were destroyed in the quake and the aftermath, and although this organ has survived, it is unplayable because the hall is closed, pending a decision whether to demolish it or not.
