The Parent Pack Reward System is a technique I implemented into my family when my middle son had a hard time understanding that his behaviour determined what he received as a reward, or that he would go without. As Max earned his Kid Kash, I gave him pretend money (matching money is available for this Parent Pack). The money was the physical representation of Max's efforts and he was proud to earn every "dollar". Max caught on quickly and soon was asking for chores to earn enough Kid Kash for the rewards he wanted. It is very important that some of the Kid Kash is easy to earn and that some require your child to apply herself in earning them. The Kid Kash that is easy to earn will show your child that the Parent Pack Reward System works. It builds trust with your child (i.e. "If I do these things, I really do get the rewards"). It will also keep balance in the system. You never want to get to a point where your child is struggling to earn Kid Kash. This will discourage your child and cause her to feel overwhelmed. You can use this reward system to encourage better behaviour, correct bad behaviour, and to build self-esteem. For instance, if your child is mean to a sibling, you can allow her to earn Kid Kash by doing something nice for another person. If you have a child who throws a fit when you leave her at preschool, give her a Kid Kash if she allows you to say goodbye without throwing the fit. Timing is very important, so keep Kid Kash with you and administer at the moment your child earns them! Rewards should vary in Kid Kash cost and desirability. It is very important that you build both the earnings and rewards lists with your child. This will make your child feel important, ensure that she is willing to do the things listed to earn her Kid Kash, and the rewards will be what your child really wants to work for. Be sure to explain to your child that the cost of the rewards may be changed if needed. I had to increase the cost of some rewards because Max's behaviour warranted that he needed to work harder for some things. You can add your child's name to this Parent Pack Reward Poster. This is helpful for personalizing the program for your child, especially if you have more than one child. Have your child's earnings and rewards printed on the poster, or delete the text and hand-write the lists yourself with your child.
