Pink Seaside Beach Rose Blossom Rosa Rugosa Poster

Closeup image of a pink seaside Beach Rose, botanical name Rosa rugosa, which means "wrinkled rose", aka Saltspray Rose, Dune Rose, Seaside Rose. In England it is called the Hedgehog Rose for the sharp, short prickles that completely cover the stems. Indigenous to the Far East, it was spotted in Japan by Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg who gave it its botanical name. Introduces to Cape Cod and the Islands in the eighteen hundreds, it quickly gained a foothold and became naturalized all over the New England coast. No one knows for sure how it made it to North America. Legend has it that it washed up after a shipwreck. Tough, hardy and resilient with a sweet scent, they are impervious to ocean salt spray. It flowers freely in shades of white to blush pink to bright rose and blooms continuously from spring to fall, and as a bonus, it's relatively disease and pest free, making it a great choice for organic gardens. Not suitable for small gardens, as it can form a colony very quickly and will continue to spread outward and onward. The juicy hips (seed pods) are food for birds and healthy for humans. They've been used medicinally in China for centuries and are loaded with vitamin C. They make a fantastic citrusy tea and delicious sweet-tart preserves!
