This postcard features people on a pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The Kaaba is a building at the centre of Islam's most mosque, the Great Mosque of Mecca. It is the most sacred site in Islam. Its location determines the qiblah (the direction of prayer) and wherever they are in the world, Muslims are expected to face the Kaaba when performing Salah, the Islamic prayer. There are five pillars of Islam which are basic acts considered mandatory by believers and are the foundation of Muslim life.The fifth pillar is called the haaj and it is the pilgrimage to Mecca if one is able. One of the rituals is that men make the journey to mecca wearing only 2 white sheets so that all are equal. Ladies wear a simple version of their ordinary dress. Pilgrims put white sheets on when they enter the sanctuary as a sign of "purity" or "ihram". The main rituals of the Hajj include walking seven times around the Kaaba termed Tawaf, touching the Black Stone termed Istilam, travelling seven times between Mount Safa and Mount Marwah termed Sa'yee, and symbolically stoning the Devil in Mina termed Ramee.
