Philadelphia was dedicated as the capital city of Pennsylvania before the arrival of William Penn. It is said that Penn wished to build a "green country town" with a darden abut each house. ne name of the city means "brotherly love". Originally laid out in1682, it is said to have been founded in 1683. Before the Revolution, Philadelphia had become the largest town in the colonies. (Graphic is circa 1850s. Information about Philadelphia comes from "The New Century History of the United States" by Edward Eggleston, published in 1907.
