Paul Gauguin - Where Do We Come From? Invitation

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (D'où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ?), painted by Paul Gauguin in Tahiti in 1897–98, is his largest painting and is often regarded as his artistic testament. Read from right to left, its symbolic figures trace the human life cycle from a sleeping infant to an old woman nearing death, while an androgynous figure reaches for fruit near the centre. This monumental oil on burlap is held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
