Five male bathers occupy a compact landscape beside the water, their bodies arranged as a rhythmic group rather than as individual portraits. Cézanne builds the figures with firm contours and patches of colour that echo the trees and banks around them, reducing the distinction between body and landscape. Painted during the final years of his life on a small canvas measuring only 42 by 55 centimetres, the work belongs to a subject that had occupied him for decades, as his late bather compositions became increasingly synthetic and monumental.
