Paul Cezanne - Chateau Noir Large Clock

Château Noir, painted in Aix-en-Provence between 1900 and 1904 in oil on canvas by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. The ochre building emerges from dense trees and rocks, its walls partly hidden by a web of branches beneath a dark, leaden sky. Cézanne breaks the architecture and landscape into interlocking strokes of green, blue, brown and warm stone tones, making the house seem embedded in the terrain. He repeatedly painted Château Noir and its surroundings during his late years, returning to the site from different positions and under changing light. These variations allowed him to treat architecture not as a separate subject but as another solid form within the Provençal landscape. The house, known through local legends and once nicknamed “Château Diable,” had Gothic windows and unfinished walls that gave it the appearance of a ruin. Cézanne rented a small room there from 1897 to 1902 and even tried unsuccessfully to buy the property in 1899.
