It is managed by the National Parks Service and The Bureau of Land Management. The 1,048,325- acre monument is larger than the state of Rhode Island. There are no paved roads. It is one of the most remote areas in the U.S.A. The monument and the surrounding area are recognized for exceptional combinations of high elevation plateaus, superb air quality, sparse population and prevailing cloud-free weather all of which contribute to some of the best opportunities for observing and enjoying dark night skies.
