Palace of Winds Jaipur India Postcard

Hawa Mahal (translated into English means Palace of the Winds) is located in Jaipur, India. The structure was built of red and pink sandstone in 1799. Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built this grand and historical palace. Lal Chand Ustad designed this 5-story castle that resembles a honeycomb of a beehive with its 953 small windows called " jharokhas" which are decorated with intricate latticework. The lattice allowed the royal ladies to be observers of the outside world without being seen themselves. The had to obey the strict rules of "purdah" which forbade them from appearing in public without covering their faces.
