The Banker horses were brought over to America in the 1500s.The horses thought to have survived a shipwreck that stranded them on the barrier islands of the Outer Banks, North Carolina or they may have been abandoned on the islands after an exploratory expedition. Bankers are allowed to remain on the islands due to their historical significance and are protected by the Corolla Wild Horse Protection Act.
