Orangutan Habitat Magnet

Orangutans are the gentle red apes found in the wild only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Rainforests are not only essential to the climate of planet earth but are home habitat to endangered species, such as the orangutan. They are intelligent vegetarians that have fingerprints and three of the same blood types as we humans and whose name means "people of the forest", reflecting an appreciation for their intelligence. Hundreds of young orangutans ( like the little female pictured here) are orphaned when their mothers are killed during the clearing of rain forest land. A version of this magnet was distributed at some of Dr. Birute Galdikas's speaking engagements in 2009. Dr. Galdikas is one of the three renowned primatologists sometimes referred to as "Leakey's Angels," along with Jane Goodall (chimpanzees) and the late Dian Fossey (mountain gorillas). It is predicted that the orangutans could be the first of the great apes to become extinct.
