Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani school girl and education activist from the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Her activism for rights to education and for women attracted the attention of the who had at times banned girls from attending school. On 9 October 2012, Malala was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by gunmen while returning home on a school bus.
