Old Waverley Books (2) Doormat

These beautiful old banded antiquarian book spines in shades of beige with faint gilt swirled flourishes are from the Victorian era (circa 1865). Books are the Waverley novels (which were hugely popular back in the day - 1814-1831 - of no TV, radio, internet or Netflix) by Sir Walter Scott including Kenilworth and The Heart of Midlothian. They were also the first historical novels as they are set in the 1700s. Numerous places around the world are now named Waverley after the novels. “…young Waverley drove through the sea of books, like a vessel without a pilot or a rudder."
