A reef octopus holds its ground, wedged snugly between two long-spined sea urchins at the base of a coral wall. It's a classic piece of octopus cleverness, using the urchins as bodyguards while it watches the world go by. A honeycomb grouper lingers nearby and a hawkfish drifts past overhead, but the octopus is unbothered. Shot on a reef in the Gulf of Thailand, this image captures one of those small unremarkable-looking moments that divers live for. The mirrored edit turns it into something more surreal and decorative, a symmetrical portal into a busy little corner of the seafloor.
