Iridescent nacre, or mother of pearl, is a composite of minerals both organic and inorganic secreted by molluscs such as oysters and mussels into the inner lining of the shells. It is also what makes up the outer layers of pearls found in certain species of oysters. Tough, resilient and extremely alluring, mother of pearl has been used for centuries by Polynesians for tools and implements. Today it is a beautiful ornament found in watches, jewellery, guns and tools, or used in decorative flourishes such as buttons. Ranging in a rainbow hue of colours mother of pearl can have a creamy white, aqua, grey or pink background with deeper shades including indigo violets and purples in its swirls and typical flowing patterns.
