“Hyperaware.” Our animal friends have senses that often amaze us. Ours seem weak by comparison. In particular, their senses of hearing and smell far bypass anything we can achieve. They will suddenly alert, bark or cry for reasons that are beyond us, that we cannot discern. They know our emotions sometimes before we do, come to offer comfort, and we don’t know how they do it. And we know that dogs, in particular, are used for many detection purposes – to hunt; as service animals to provide assistance, therapy and solace; to rescue survivors after disasters; and even to identify medical issues such as epilepsy or cancer. Our own pets aren’t service animals, but they sure do know when we open a bag of treats. They instantly appear from rooms away at the merest whisper of a seal being broken. It doesn’t matter how quiet we try to be, we aren’t nearly stealthy enough to put one past them. Everyday Mojo, ©2018
