Moon Sea Snail Seashell, Unalaska Island Postcard
This round seashell belongs to the moon sea snail. Its round shape and cream colouring is similar to the moon's, and the spiral of its formation is reminiscent of the waves of the sea. Moon sea snails are common in the waters of Unalaska Island and the Aleutian Islands as a whole. The shells of these sea snails are found most often in the spit area of Dutch Harbour, Alaska and hermit crabs favour them as homes when the snail has died. This seashell was laying on a frond of dried kelp which had turned black.
