Milkweed Pods and Seeds Artsy Colourful Postcard

It's a bright sunny November day, and amid a latticework of branches and other organic shapes and forms, these milkweed (genus Asclepias) pods are releasing their seeds to the breeze. Milkweed pods start off soft and green, and as time goes on they dry, harden and crack open. The seeds float and disperse on the wind, and where they land new plants could sprout. Milkweed is grown commercially as a hypoallergenic filling for pillows, and as insulation for winter coats. Fibres of milkweed are absorbant enough to help clean up oil spills. A type of fibre called milkweed silk comes from Asclepias plants in the St Lawrence River valley in Canada. Milkweed leaves are the primary food source for the larvae of monarch butterflies.
