The Pieta sculpted 1498-1499, is Michelangelo's famous masterpiece of art which depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. The Pieta was described by Giorgio Vasari as "a miracle wrought from a once shapeless stone". It is both Michelangelo's first major religious commission and the only work that he signed. The Pieta is currently in the Vatican Museum.
