The sun stone is one of the most iconic works of Mexican sculpture. The original monolithic stone was carved by the Mexica people at the close of the Mesoamerican Postclassic Period. Despite the fact that the exact date of the sunstone's construction has never been determined, the identifying glyph of the Aztec king Moctezuma II, at the centre of the disc, indicates that the monument dates to his ruling period from 1502 and 1520.
