William McKinley, an Ohio Republican, took the oath of office on March 4, 1897, as the 25th president of the United States. He was the last civil war veteran to serve in the office. He prosecuted the Spanish-American War and set up a protectorate over Cuba. He won a second term in 1900, and was assassinated in 1901 and succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt.
